Two thousand five hundred years ago on Vulture Peak in India, the Buddha picked up a lotus flower and demonstrated universal truth.

At the end of World War II, Zen Master Man Gong took a petal from the Korean national flower, dipped it in ink, and wrote a rough calligraphy that read: “The Whole World Is A Single Flower.” This means equality, harmony and peace. It means that you and I, the sun and moon, earth and sky, air and water, are fundamentally not separate or different. We each have the same root.

It was the great hope of Zen Master Man Gong that all human beings return to this common root, our original substance, and from the root, a single beautiful world flower of equality, harmony, and peace shall again appear.

Zen Master Seung Sahn initiated The Whole World Is A Single Flower (WWSF) conference as a way to bring people from different countries and traditions together in the spirit of unity and harmony.

The Whole World is A Single Flower Triennial Conference has been hosted by and held in different countries since 1987. The Conference has enabled zen practitioners from various parts of the world to assemble and learn. In this connection, due to the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Twelfth Conference that was originally scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur will be conducted on-line. This online Conference will be held on each Sunday in September and the second Sunday of October 2020 covering 5 Conference sessions.

The Hoeh Beng Buddhist Temple is honoured to organise this first-ever The Whole World is A Single Flower online Zen Conference to enable zen practitioners to meet online without being restricted by the pandemic. This, indeed, is a leap forward and in consonance with the theme “The Whole World is A Single Flower, Zen Blooms Everywhere “.
